Breathing with Nature: Exploring Aquatic Plants’ Role in Carbon Capture at Festivaletteratura

At the Festivaletteratura in Mantua, we engaged citizens in a hands-on exploration of gas exchange in freshwater ecosystems, highlighting the critical role of aquatic plants in mitigating carbon dioxide emissions from wetlands. By directly measuring the processes of photosynthesis and respiration in various species of aquatic plants, we demonstrated how these organisms regulate carbon levels in the environment. Participants actively took part in the experiments, using scientific tools to observe how different plants absorb and release carbon dioxide. This collaborative effort not only provided valuable insights into the role of wetlands in the global carbon cycle but also fostered a deeper understanding among the public of the importance of preserving these ecosystems to contrast climate change.
